Training
New Canines
New canines are personally chosen to meet the requirements of your department. Dogs are between the age of 11 months and 2 and a half years of age. These dogs receive 200 hours of training before they are introduced to the handler.
The dogs are then introduced to the handler, and aquainted with the family to ensure a smooth adjustment. Formal training, with the dog and handler as a team, begins and will take 5 to 7 weeks. Training for explosives detection requires an 8-10 week program.
Training sessions can be conducted on a flexible schedule to meet your departments man-power needs. Every handler receives one-on-one personal instruction during training.
The dogs are trained in:
- Narcotics Detection
- Explosives Detection
- Obedience
- Agility
- Tracking
- Article Search
- Building Search
- Area Search
- Aggression Control
The Narcotics include: - Marijuana
- Cocaine
- Heroin
- Methamphetamines
- Ecstasy

Your new Police Service Dog will be trained to meet and exceed the Certification Standards set by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission and the North American Police Work Dog Association. It is our goal to provide your handler with the best possible training and instill confidence in him so that he is prepared to deploy his new partner and be successful in every situation.
Our training program has been approved by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission and I am an evaluator for the State Canine Certification Test. I am also a Nationally Certified Trainer with the North American Police Work Dog Association. I have trained and assisted in the training of approx 150 Police Service Dogs that are currently on duty around the country.

Family Day
Family members of all ages are invited! Excel K-9 understands the commitment a handler and his family make when they aquire a canine. In addition to aquainting the new dog with the family, we welcome visits from family members during training sessions, and especially on Family Day. It's a great way to get involved with and learn more about the training process. |
